It proved a successful second foray south of the border for the Scottish auctioneers, with 85 per cent of the 448 lots sold to bring in £850,000, 97 per cent of the pre-sale estimate.
Four bidders fought to the high £30,000 estimate for 17.7.69, this 6ft 61/2in x 12ft 1in (2m x 3.7m) acrylic on canvas by John Hoyland (b.1934), when a dealer and private collector then continued battling in increments of £1000 until the latter secured it at £155,000.
This price more than triples the previous record of £48,000 paid for the artist's15.7.68 at Sotheby's last July.
